This is a juicy one for you to get your teeth into. This year we’re looking at content in new ways, and to kick start this process we’d like you to try playing with a manuscript. Luath Press have kindly given us one of their books for you to work with. What can you make from Catriona Child’s Trackman?

What are Luath Press & Trackman?
Luath Press was established by Tom and Rene Atkinson in Ayrshire in 1981. Tom had recently returned to Scotland and, finding there were no good descriptive guides to the popular parts of Scotland, set about writing and publishing the Luath Guides Series. Other books by other writers followed including a number of popular titles that have remained in print for many years, such as Mountain Days and Bothy Nights and Bare Feet and Tackety Boots.
Since 1997, Luath has built on the sound core of well established books first published by Tom and Rene, and created various new series (On the Trail of…, The Quest For…, Wild Lives, Let’s Explore, Luath Storyteller, Viewpoints) and launched various new writers and poets (Alison Irvine, Daniel Gray, Mark Thomson).
Trackman is the first novel by Catriona Child, published by Luath Press. This is what the Herald had to say about it:
In her debut novel Catriona Child has all the makings of a cult hit…She handles the tension between the fantastical premise and the raw and sensitive matter of a dead schoolboy tastefully, and the book’s sense of place makes it a delight for lovers of Edinburgh.
Trackman has a number of different narratives, marked by the use of different fonts in the manuscript. It takes place at various locations within Edinburgh’s city boundaries – Catriona has plotted them on her website, here.

What is Luath Press interested in?
We’re keen to explore what’s next for the novel. Digital books are of course already a reality. But we think there’s something more we could be doing with manuscripts such as Trackman. How can they take on a more vibrant and non-linear life online?
The novel Trackman by Catriona Child is made available under this Creative Commons license with the additional restriction that the manuscript must not be published in its full linear form.
